Hurt, John Frank – enlisted in Company A 2nd VA Cavalry on May 11, 1861. On August 23, 1862, Gen. Jubal Early’s division was trapped on the north side of the Rappahannock River at Warrenton Springs, near Jeffersonton, VA. Stonewall Jackson, sent company A 2nd VA Cavalry across the rain swollen river to get behind the Union army that was surrounding Early on three sides in an effort to trap his division against the river. The 2nd VA Cavalry was spotted by Union sentries and artillery was turned on them. Company A held their position as shells exploded around them. Finally, one shell exploded close enough to wound Private John Frank Hurt and his friend Private Andrew Rusher. Both of their horses were killed by the shell. Both men were placed on horseback behind riders and forced to hold on as the unit rode back to the river, forded it, and continued on to camp. Both men were taken to a Confederate Hospital in Jeffersonton, which was probably the Southern Baptist Church of Warrenton Springs, in Jeffersonton, which served as a hospital during much of the war. Andrew Rusher died of his wounds on September 5th. John Frank Hurt was hospitalized 17 days until September 10th, after which he was assigned to be a nurse and was “detailed to wait on sick at hospital”. After his recovery, he rejoined the 2nd Virginia Cavalry until July 7, 1864 when he transferred to an artillery unit. Soldier data submitted by David Rusher, David.Rusher@imb.org

Karen, Another possible note for your Civil War Hurts page — In Capt. John Morton’s account of the battle at Brice’s Crossroads, he mentions that Capt. Ab Hurt commanded the escort for Col. Tyree Bell. I at first wondered whether this mightn’t be the A.B. Hurt you already have listed — Bell had previously commanded the 12th TN Inf, but at its second consolidation became supernumerary. However, the writeup you have seems to suggest that AB Hurt stayed with the 12th when they went to Georgia, which wouldn’t match this incident. Also note that I’ve not found any other reference to this man, except in this one account. Randel M. Price

I forwarded this message to Mike Parsons, who replies: Karen / Randel – Correct, Anthony Benezette Hurt was with the 22nd / 12th throughout the war and would not have been at Brice’s Crossroads. Another possibility is A.D. Hurt, listed as 1st Lt., K Co, 19/20 TN Cav. There is an Absalom Derbery Hurt, but he is listed as a Private in H Co, 6th TN Inf. (info from Tennesseans in the Civil War – Civil War Centennial Commission – Part II – 1964).
Randall says: Co. K of the consolidated 19th/20th was put together from Cos. E and F of Russell’s 20th Cavalry and Tennesseans from Ballentine’s 2nd Mississippi (TitCW Vol I, among other sources). The Captain is said to have been W.W. McDowell, who was not in the 20th (or the 18th), so I suspect he may have been from the 2nd MS. There is no A.D. Hurt on the rolls of the 20th Cavalry — so he either (i) served in the Mississippi regiment (ii) joined the 20th after July 1864 (the last roster on file prior to the consolidation) or (iii) was part of some small command that had previously not been part of any regiment (there is evidence that part of Co. E of the 19/20th was in this situation). I’ve not yet had an opportunity to examine the service record film for the consolidated regiment (as I have for the 20th) so I can’t draw any additional conclusions. The only Hurts I’ve found on the rolls of the 20th are John C. in Co. B (Greer’s Regiment from Carroll County) and J.M. in Co. G (a Dyer Co. regiment)
Mike asks: Was “Ab” Hurt listed in a unit, or as a staff officer under Bell? If there is a unit id’d, maybe we could back-engineer to a name.
Randall replies: No such luck — he is mentioned in passing as the commander of Bell’s escort. Although Bell was only a Colonel at the time, he was in command of a Brigade, and so had a staff and apparently an “escort company” of some sort.

General A.C.Gillem commanding the Kentucky 12th regiment during a raid in Greeneville Tennessee 4 September 1864, rebel General John Hunt Morgan was killed. In October 1864 during a raid on rebel forces in Greeneville Tennessee Lt. Hurt in Company L of the 12th Regiment was injured when charging the enemy and his horse fell on him fracturing his breastbone and rib(s).
Lt. Hurt was in the 12th Regiment Kentucky Cavalry when under General A.C. Gillem Union forces defeated Confederate forces under General John C. Breckenridge in the Second Battle of Saltville Virginia, 17-18 December 1864. Destroying the saltworks at Saltville was considered a major blow to the Confederacy’s dwindling resources. The saltworks were considered vital to the Confederate war effort because the salt was used in preserving meat for Confederate soldiers and civilians.
Captain Hurt requested a 20 day leave 20 January 1865 stating “I have served for two years and a half and have never been absent from the command during the time specified. My family resides in the vicinity of Paducah Kentucky and as my property has all been destroyed by the inroads of guerilla gangs, I desire to remove my family to a safer place.”
