Clifton first appears in census records January 5, 1920 (along with his brother Edward) in Chester, Delaware County, PA, as a three-year-old child with parents Edward J. Berry (22 years old) and Ophelia H. (20 years old). The family lived in a rented home at West Second Street. All four were black. All four were born in Maryland. Edward and Ophelia were able to read and write. Edward’s parents were born in Maryland. Ophelia’s father was born in Delaware and her mother in Maryland. Edward was a laborer at an electric works.
