Bruce was born on July 12, 1910, in Bethlehem, Northampton County, PA, to parents Edward Franklin Farquhar and Mabel Labarre Straub.
Education
Bruce attended the University of Kentucky, where his father was an English professor. He was on the tennis team.
Occupation
Bruce worked as a chemist at DuPont in Wilmington, Delaware.

Military Service
Bruce registered for the draft in 1940 for World War II but he did not serve. He was 30 years old at the time and worked for DuPont at the Virginia location. From the reverse side of the card we learn that he was 5’11” tall, weighed 195 pounds, and had blue eyes and brown hair. The family lived at 361 Maple Avenue, Waynesboro, VA.
