I am a descendant of Burgess (Bird) Hurt, born 7 Feb 1818 (son of William White Hurt). He married Elizabeth Davis, b 14 July 1810 in Adair County, Kentucky, d/o Berryman Davis. Burgess died in St. Clair County, Missouri in 1888. He and Elizabeth had eight children: Samuel b 25 Sept 1842, Amanda Melvina Hurt (My Gt. Grandmother) born 9 Sept 1844, Horrace Hurt b 11 Oct 1846, Rosina Hurt b 2 April 1847, Zack Taylor Hurt b 17 Aug 1849, Montry Hurt b 8 May 1851, Edwin Hurt b 4 May 1855 and James Hurt b abt 25 June 1863. I have the original page from their bible reflecting their children. It appears that the last sons birth may have caused Elizabeth to die, as she died on 26 June 1863 in Alexandria Twsp, Leavenworth County, Kansas and James died 10 July 1863. I have not been able to locate much information on the family while in Missouri nor have I found any other cousins. I think that one of Burgess Hurt’s brothers was a doctor in Leavenworth, Kansas and maybe that’s why they were there. It appears that after Elizabeth’s death, Burgess may have married a woman by the name of Lina Smith. Burgess and Elizabeth Hurt lived in Kentucky until 1842 when they moved to Cedar County, Missouri. In 1844 or 1845 they returned to Kentucky until 1848 or 1849 and then moved to St. Clair County Missouri until the war. They moved to Kansas where Mrs. Hurt died. He returned to Missouri. In 1845 Burgess Hurt was elected as Judge of Cedar County, Missouri, his township. He was a Blcksmith an a farmer.
His daughter Amanda Melvin Hurt married Daniel Poe Shippey s/o David Madison Shippey and Lydia Dakin in Cedar County, Missour 9 September 1866. They had seven children, Olive Shippey, Albert R. Shippey, Eva Shippey, Alvin Burgess Shippey (my grandfather) Walter S. Shippey, Wilbur Poe Shippey and Lelia Lois Shippey. Daniel Poe and Amanda moved to Visalia, California where Daniel was a carpenter. The two houses that he built for his family are still standing. Daniel and Amanda are both buried in the Visalia Public Cemeter.
My Grandfather, Alvin Burgess Shippey b 28 Mar 1874, d 20 April 1942, married Ethel Lillian Hamilton (b 21 June 1881, d 26 Aug 1972), June 15, 1902. Alvin Burgess Shippey was also a carpenter and built the house that he and Ethel lived in. He and Ethel separated, after their children were grown, but never divorced. Alvin moved to Sonora, California in the mountains. He moved back to Visalia, California until he became ill and then he went to the Veteran’s Hospital in Boise, Idaho where he died. He served in the Spanish American War. From that marriage two children, my father Chester Abbott Shippey (born August 19, 1904 and still living) and Mervyn Gruendyke Shippey b 17 dec 1906, deceased.
My father Chester Abbott Shippey married my mother Norma Ozelia Alsin (Canadian Fresn) December 13, 1933. Of that marriage two children, Jeanine Shippey Clarke b August 4, 1936 and Marian Shippey Cote’, b Jan 1, 1939. Chester worked for the Southern California Edison Company as a lineman and finally a mapper before his retirement in the 1960’s.

Hi…
Amanda Hurt Shippey was also my G Gmother. My grandfather was Wilbur Poe Shippee, and my mother is Dorothy Shippee Argyle (who is just turning 91 next month!)
Love to help you fill in any blanks on this side. I believe I have some of the papers that Marian copied for my mom when she visited Chester years ago. Thanks for doing such a great job. We reside in Kaysville, Davis county, Utah. Karen Argyle Christensen
