John Hurt, only child of James and Jane Bickley Hurt of King William County, Virginia, was born about 1738. He fought in the Revolutionary War, joining the 6th Virginia as a chaplain on October 1, 1771. He served as Brigade Chaplain from August 18, 1778 to the close of the war. From March 4, 1791 he served as a chaplain for the United States Army until his resignation in April 1794. For his service, he was awarded 7,000 acres of land. He died in Louisa County, Virginia in 1801.
