There are several Joseph Hurts floating around in Virginia in the 1700’s. On this page I will try to distinguish between them.

Joseph Hurt Number 1

The following passage is from The Early Hurt Family of Virginia, unpublished manuscript by Oscar Hurt, page 20: “Joseph Hurt. I am speculating that this Joseph Hurt was a son of John Hurt (d. 1723) and his wife, Sarah Hurt, instead of being a grandson, as well as he may have been. His home was in King William County, Virginia. He appears to have lived in Amelia County for a while, at least. Then he appears to have moved back to King William County. He patented land in Amelia County in 1740. In the order book record shown in 320, it might be interpreted that Joseph Hurt was dead in 1742. However, he sold the land he patented in 1740 by deed dated 5/18/1744. He said in that 1744 deed that he was then living in King William County. There was a Joseph Hurt living in Caroline County, Virginia, from 1752 to 1762, according to records shown as 326 to 335 inclusive. I am not able to even speculate as to who his family were. If this subject Joseph Hurt left any children, I am not able, so far, to identify any of them.”

Joseph Hurt Number 3

The following data came from Mike Miller, who is looking for a Joseph Hurt, Jr., who married a Mildred Burnett in Patrick County, Virginia on September 22, 1797. This information is from a book entitled, The Burnetts and Their Connections, published in 1989 by June Bork of Apple Valley, California. She indicates on page 247 of Volume 1 that “Milly (Mildred) (BURNETT) was born 1780 in Henry County, Virginia, in that part that became Patrick County in 1791, and died in 1867 in Wayne County, Kentucky. She married 22 September 1797 in Patrick County, to JOSEPH HURT, (Junr). The bondsman was his brother, Moses Hurt, by Rev. Jesse Jones….” “JOSEPH HURT was born 1776 in Henry County, Virginia in that part that had been formed from Pittsylvania County the year of his birth, but known today as Patrick County [formed 1791]. Joseph’s father was Joseph, Sr. and mother was Mary Parmer.”

Here is some more data on Joseph Hurt, Jr., submitted by Vernon Teaff:
Joseph Hurt Jr. was born in Henry County Virginia about 1775, married Mildred (Millie) Burnett, daughter of Jeremiah and Rosa Burnett on 22 Sept 1797 in Patrick County, Virginia.

He moved to Spartenburg District, South Carolina before the 1800 census. In 1809 he and his family and younger brother James moved to Wayne Co. Kentucky and settled on Turkey Creek where his father in law, Jeremiah Burnett had secured 200 acres of land on a head right claim in 1805.

In 1817 he bought 80 acres of land in Horse Hollow from his brother in law, (Raccoon John) Smith and moved there. Later he moved to near Mt. Pisgah, Kentucky where he lived until his death in 1864. (he was dropped from the tax list after 1864) He was buried in the Mt. Pisgah Cemetery without a grave marker. Time went on and his son, Joseph Hurt III, died and his children put a marker at his grave. When Joseph’s wife died the children wanted matching markers for their graves and moved the stone from Joseph III’s grave after chiseling the dates from it. Perhaps the grandchildren did not know the dates of their grandfather’s birth or death or neglected to put them on the stone and now they are not known. It is not known if Millie lies beside her husband. Their children were: Nancy, Mary, Sarah, John Crawford, Martha, Gabriel, Reuben, Joseph III, Varner, Anna.

Joseph Hurt Number 4

I am looking for a Joseph Hurt and Elizabeth Chafin. The following is what I know. In the Floyd County, Va census there are 4 different Hurts, all living at separate places. John William, 18 years,my greatgrandfather, is listed living with John Duncan, No 1047 on census. His father is Joseph. His brother George Cebert Hurt, 16 years old, is listed living with Joseph Palmer, no 796 on census. I understand that Palmer used to be Parmer, so I am curious about your Joseph Hurt Number 3. There is also a Sister Susannah who is married to Noah Booth on the census, no 805. One other Hurt is listed, Hyram Hurt, Age 10, living with Solomon Slusher, no 1138 on Census. I feel both parents must be deceased. I do not know if Hyram is a brother.

My father told me that his Grandfather was known as Bill (John William) and fought in the civil war, and two of his brothers got in a wagon and went west to avoid the war.

I have the marriage certificate of John William Hurt and Bethany Reed listing Joseph and Elizabeth as parents. Also old folks in Va gave my cousin, who has been doing genealogy many years ago info that Joseph’s father was known as John by some family and others called him Richard. Info on Joseph’s three known children follows: John William Hurt born 1842 married Bethany Reed, died 1910 in Floyd County, Va, buried at Reed Cemetery, Floyd County, Va. George Cebert Hurt born May 12, 1846, married Delilah Dulaney, died July 14, 1919, and buried at Reed Cemetery, Floyd County, Va. Susannah Hurt born Aug 4, 1839 in Floyd County, Va, married Noah Booth, died May 18, 1921.
