Louisa Ellen Jordan is the most recent of my Jordan line, which stretches back quite far into the past. She married into my Hurt line and is my second great-grandmother. She was the daughter of William Jordan and Medy Boyd.
Birth
Ellen was born on May 13, 1827, in Milan, Gibson County, Tennessee.
Marriage
Ellen married Joseph David Hurt on March 6, 1845, in Gibson County, Tennessee. Joseph David Hurt is the son of James Mann Hurt & Martha Patricia Marshall. He was born on May 4, 1822, in Virginia. He died on July 24, 1864, in Atlanta, De Kalb, Georgia, at Peach Tree Creek at the Battle of Atlanta when he rose from behind a cotton bale and was hit in the head with a mini ball. He was a member of the 55th Tennessee Infantry and rose to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, G Company.
Children
David and Ellen had six children.
- David Hurt, Jr., born on November 29, 1847; died young, before 1850. His birth is recorded in the family bible (according to Judy Mayo Murphy’s research notes).
- Albert W. Hurt, born on March 12, 1849; died on February 10, 1877. No record of marriage or descendants (Judy Mayo Murphy research notes).
- Martha Tennessee Hurt. She was born on June 9, 1851. She died on August 31, 1879. Nickname was Tee.

She died on July 15, 1914, in Milan, Gibson, Tennessee, USA. Also Known As was “Lizzie” or “Sissie”. Nickname was Lizzie. Burial in Lot 216, Oakwood Cemetery, Milan, Tennessee. In a 1990 copy of the marriage certificate that I received from Judy Mayo Murphy, W.J. Lannom and Lizzie Hurt were married on December 28, 1881, and were married by M.M. Taylor, M.G.

(Roll 81, Gibson County Deeds, Vol. 2-3 1869-1872, Vol. 2., p. 436)
I’ve contacted the TN State Library & Archives to get a copy of the original record. This record is significant in that it proves the relationship between Ellen and her father. The W.S. Jordan referred to might be her half brother.
Death
Ellen died on December 31, 1876, in Milan, Gibson County, Tennessee.
