Karen, While browsing past email files, I noticed I had never forwarded the letter with information discussing Mary Ann Kirkendall b. 1779. You will find the letter imbedded in the notes I have accumulated for Cornelius Kirkendall b. 1774.

My notes for Cornelius:

– Enlisted as a private in war of 1812, Capt. Jenks Pullen’s Co, NY Detached Mil.

– The 1850 census in New York, County of Yates, town of Milo, has Cornelius along with wife Margaret (Sleppy) living next door to his son Joseph Kirkendall and family. According to census records, Cornelius was 76 and Margaret was 72 at that time. Cornelius no occupation, born New Jersey. Wife Margaret born Pennsylvania.

– Cornelius was born in New Jersey.

– Cornelius probably spent some time in Pennsylvania, probably met his wife there.

– Contents of letter written by Robert John Totino, Sr., 1422 Stanbridge St., Norristown, PA, 19401, dated Jan. 30, 1972. “The Kikendall family (Cornelius) that you refer to that lived around Nescopek, Luzerne Co., PA. in the early 1800’s. My ancestress, Mary Ann Kirkendall, was born 1781 in New Jersey. She was undoubtably the sister to Emmanuel K. b.ca.1766. His sons in the PA 1850 census that were born 1800 all give their birthplaces as New Jersey but he is listed in N’ampton Co., PA. in 1800 and his son, Leonard, b.1804, gives his birth place as PA. So, it all fits together. Manuel had a son, Cornelius, b.1796, NJ, so in all likelihood, Manuel had a brother, Cornelius. Certainly the birthdate of your Cornelius makes it a possibility that the two were brothers. My Mary Ann married David BOGERT b.1776 in Knowlton Tp., Sussex Co. (now Warren) NJ. They settled for some years in Upper Mt. Bethel Twp, N’ampton Co., PA. This is the same place that Emmanuel lived in N’ampton Co. during the 1800 census. The 1790 census lists John K. in Upper Mt. Bethel Twp. with 3 sons over 15 and 3 sons under 15 and one daughter. The 1800 census lists him still living there but with the older three sons living on their own and another two young sons and daughter as well. Living near him at the same time are now Manuel, b.ca.1766, Lewry, b.ca.1770, and Henry b.ca.1775. My theory is that Henry was the oldest of the younger set of brothers, thus leaving Manuel and Louis as two of the three older sons. The one missing son must be your Cornelius. That daughter of his must be my Mary Ann. David and Mary Ann BOGERT’s first son was John, b.1798. The 1810 census shows Emmanuel living in Selem Twp., Luzerne Co., PA just across the line from Columbia County where the family also owned much land. Lewis is still living in U. Mt. Bethel Twp, but Henry has moved somewhere else. John, the father, seems to have moved or died. The 1820 census shows Lewis as having joined up with the family in Salem Twp., Luzerne County. Meanwhile, back on the farm, the family is represented by Isaac b.ca.1775, David, b.ca.1780, Samuel, b.ca.1750/1760. Samuel probably is a brother to our John. The bulk of Emmanuel’s family finally settled around the area of Mifflin Twp, Columbia Co., PA. This is about 10 miles from where David and Mary Ann BOGERT settled in Huntington Twp., Luzerne Co., PA. in 1843, some 33 years after Manuel made the move. I cannot prove any of this and it is all theory but toss it around and see if it jibes with any of your theories.”

– Cornelius is buried at Coopers Plain, Steuben County, NY. Headstone is flat with engraved weeping willow. It states as follows: “Cornelius Kirkendall. Died August 6, 1851. Aged 77 years”

– According to William P. Kikendall’s Journal, Cornelius Kirkendall was in Hornby, New York, on November 27, 1827.

– He is in Milo 1850 census, but always shows in Hornby, NY, in other census. 1830 – Cornelius, Hornby, p. 338. 1840 – in Hornby, p. 175.

Good luck in you research, genealogically and otherwise. If you run across something regarding Cornelius Kirkendall b. 1774 please drop me a line. Sincerely, Terry Kikendall

Karen, I ran across your inquiry regarding Samuel Kirkendall baptized Dec 30, 1744 on the Kuykendall Genealogy Page dated October 12, 1997. You indicated that Mary Ann Kirkendall (b. 1779) was the daughter of Samuel and a woman known only as Mary. I have obtained information tracing my ancestry back to Cornelius Kirkendall (b.1774 d.1851). A Mary Ann Kirkendall married to a David Bogert is mentioned in a note attached to Cornelius. The note (actually a letter dated Jan. 30, 1972 from a Robert John Totino, Sr. who is a descendent of Mary Ann Kirkendall) theorizes that Mary Ann Kirkendall and Cornelius (b.1774) were sister and brother but had no proof. Have you ran across a Cornelius born 1774 in your research? If so, I would be grateful if you would share it with me. Cornelius was born in New Jersey and resided at various locations in New York including Milo and Hornby, buried at Coopers Plain, Steuben County, New York. He married Margaret Sleppy, a Dutch woman, born in Pennsylvania. They had 4 children Sally, John (b.1806), Eliza E. (b.1809), and Joseph W.(b. 1811). John and two sons {James Parrish (b.1829), William Parse (b.1827)} came to Michigan from New York sometime around 1838 and set up homesteads near Eaton Rapids.

James Parrish was my great-great-grandfather. Thanks, Terry L. Kikendall knee.boot@voyager.net
