James Henry Smith married Mary Jane “Molly” McClellan in 1853, daughter of Deacon John McClellan and Isobel Cummings. She was born in 1833 in Hebron, New York. They are buried in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Carroll County, Mississippi. Their son was Charles McClellan Smith (1857-1959).

He and his wife Frances are recorded as being born in Virginia. James is recorded as being born in Tennessee and the younger siblings in Mississippi. Children in the household are: James, 18, working as a laborer; William, 14; Emmarretta, 12; John, 10; Octavia, 7; Narcisus, 5.

James H Smith appears in the 1860 census as a 29-year-old man, born in Tennessee. His home was located in Police District 3, Carroll County, Mississippi, and his post office was Greenwood. Other household members were Mary J Smith, 28, born in New York; and three children, Fred Smith, 5; Charley Smith, 3; Jno D Smith, 10, all born in Mississippi. James worked as an overseer. He did not own any real estate. His personal estate was valued at $2,000.
1870
James appears in the US federal census for 1870 as “J H Smith,” age 39, born in TN. His home was located in Township 18 Range 2, Carroll County, Mississippi, using the post office at Bright Corner. The value of his real estate was $2,000 and his personal estate $1,000. Household members included “E C Smith,” age 34. This apparently was his sister, Emmaretta Cook Smith, living in the house to help out with the children, after the death of his wife in 1867. Children in the house are: F B Smith, 15; C M Smith, 12; J D Smith, 10; W J Smith, 8; and Frank Smith, 6.
My Grandmother was the daughter of Buck Smith. Her name was Annie Lynn Smith Ogilvie. I am having trouble with a DAR supplemental and need a copy of Charles McClellan Smith’s Obituary. Thank you for any assistance.
