Jane Watson was born a Presbyterian. She transferred to the Methodist church when she married Moses Chamberlin. She was called before the governing board of Brethren and threatened with ex-communication for wearing such gaiety (flowers in her bonnet and foulard silk skirts.) Moses had given the bell and pews and carpet and other substantial items of support and she was allowed to wear her flowers and feathers. (Noted by James C. Furst in a letter to Jane C. Downey, May 6, 1957.)
