My great-grandfather and second great-grandfather lived on Clifton Plantation in Carroll County, Mississippi. That’s interesting, I’d love to know more. I tried and failed to find it on my own, but luckily, some Smith relatives stepped up to help me locate it – thanks, Smiths!!!
Although no Smiths own any of the property now, and it’s presumably been partitioned up somewhat, the house is still standing. It’s located about a mile down 220 from county road 23 on the left.
Here’s how the house appears today. The columns were removed in the mid 1960’s.
Looks like it’s seen better days.
Not “OUR” Clifton Plantation
There seem to be multiple Clifton Plantations in Mississippi. These are the Clifton Plantations that weren’t owned by Smiths:
Clifton Plantation, Holmes County, MS
Here’s a Clifton Plantation in Holmes County, MS. I found it online at a real estate company’s website. This is not “my” Clifton Plantation as the chain of ownership doesn’t match up with my ancestors. Plus it’s in the wrong county.
Here’s their FB page: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Clifton-Plantation/214306118588630
The screen shot below is from a book called Must See Mississippi: 50 Favorite Places, available on Google.
This book clearly states the owners of the property, none of whom are Smiths.
Clifton Plantation, Jefferson County
I found this newspaper article about the sale of a Clifton Plantation in Clifton, Jefferson County, in 1839.
This is Uncle HARRY SMITH’s old place where the John Douglas Smith BBQ was held.
I am also doing research into my Smith line and came across some information that may be useful to you.
James Henry Smith may have been an overseer for a planter in Carroll county Mississippi by the name of John W. Mallory. Found this info on 1860 slave schedule for Carroll county. I have had some trouble locating the name of plantation, but it may not have been a plantation per say. If you do some research on J. W. Mallory he was a slave dealer and got into a little legal trouble.
The location according to Land Records put his land somewhere near Hemingway MS.

Doug Smith (great-grandson).
Karen,
Hi! I am Lynn DeFoore Cox and my grandfather was Charles McClellan Smith who was born at Clifton in Carroll County in 1857. My grandmother was Ann Judson Smith DeFoore who also lived at Clifton before eventually living in Sidon, MS. My sisters and I searched all afternoon today for the remains of Clifton and could not find it…can you send me exact directions?
I grew up on pine bluff/smith place. I have always been curios of the history there.
